Film-Icon   Story, from the Director:

Two struggling actors, who happen to be lesbians too, find themselves caged inside a room (metaphorically). Room symbolises the shield from outer world to protect  themselves from the judgmental eyes.  The journey that speaks of transformation as they  are now ready to face the world the way they are.

Ardor is Unnikrishnan’s first film as a director who has a feather for best editing Filmfare award in 2014 along with Aarif Shaikh for D-day. He considers Aarif Sheikh a mentor parent in this journey. He comes from a computer background where his father worked for HCL back in the day. Despite coming from a non-filmy background, his family was very supportive of his choice of profession as they understood his love for creative work and supported him in every way they could. He has graduated in journalism and was keen on pursuing wildlife photography. His teacher back in 2014 told him that there is less scope for this profession and that he’ll have to work outside India to establish himself. He was not keen on heading out of the country and his creative streak led him to editing. He started his journey as an editor with a cookery show for NDTV Good Times. He has done his editing course from L V Prasad Film and Television Academy. He has worked as an assisting editor for about 20 to 30 films where he worked with likes of John Abraham, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arjum Rampal. He worked with Salman Khan for his ad film Dixie Scott. He has also worked for famous Malayalam film – Premum.

“I have a nose piercing and I have noticed people stare at me. I am really afraid of the society who is blindfolded and has set limitations. With Ardor I wanted to show you have to live your life the way you want to and not the way society want you to along with the love story of a lesbian couple. I had written poetry and decided to depict it in a short film. In the end I am not trying to show that these two girls who are in love are thinking of committing of suicide, which was misinterpreted by several people. But its an acceptance in their eyes of who they are and the life they have chosen. They have accepted that they will have to face the world and cannot live in the house always!”

“I was able to make this film with a small budget of Rs 12,000 as everyone worked on the film without a fee. It was shot at one of the actresses flat. I borrowed the camera from a friend who was supposed to shoot but the project got delayed by 31 days as he had other commitments. So finally I asked for his dates and he gave me 3 days. On the first day of shoot, we needed natural sunlight at about 6-6:30 am. When I left from my home to shoot, the actor called me to inform that light has gone off only in her flat. Surprisingly electricity was working in the entire building but her house. So we did makeup under staircase light. Light came at 6:50 am but that day sun didn’t come up. So I decided not to wait for natural light anymore but decided to get some lights of our own. We finished shooting in one day but beach scene was yet to be shot. We reached juhu beach around 4:30 am to capture where the cameraman told me that you cannot see sunrise in Bombay from juhu beach. I decided to shoot with whatever I had in hand to complete this film. This is my first film as a director and taking that first step is always difficult so I was a bit sceptical initially but was super happy with the end result.”

Short and beautiful. Good camera work. Yes, the message is strong, the message is obvious, but it needs to be heard too from time to time. Thumbs up to the poetry!
